The 100-year old street lights going LED

Another great article from Lux, the independent guide to lighting, writes about eight 100-year-old street lights in central London are set to enter the 21st century when they are fitted with LED light sources in the coming weeks.

The work involves stripping each column down, installing new strengthening bars, repairing imperfections, replacing the lantern bowl and lights and repainting the columns to restore them to their former glory.

The historic columns, located in the shopping and business district along Tottenham Court Road, will be restored and upgraded to accommodate the energy-efficient LED modules as part of a wider project to upgrade infrastructure in the area.

The £35 million West End Project was awarded to Eurovia, who will deliver improvements to the heart of Camden’s busy West End, providing safer, greener and more attractive streets for residents and visitors.

The restoration of street lighting columns is being undertaken by its subcontractor, Nottingham-based civil and electrical engineering firm McCann. The work involves stripping each column down, installing new strengthening bars, repairing imperfections, replacing the lantern bowl and lights and repainting the columns to restore them to their former glory.

The award of the work follows on from McCann’s recent street lighting works on The Mall and Constitution Hill.

McCann’s area manager Steve Ellis told Lux: ‘The West End Project is a landmark moment for Camden Borough, with significant investment pumped into the infrastructure of the area to make it even more attractive for residents, visitors and businesses.

‘We’ve worked on LED lighting installation and maintenance projects across the country and we are delighted to be installing the latest in energy efficient LED lighting technology in Camden to keep the Borough lit for many decades to come.’
